Rarotonga

The excitement builds, but there's a thick layer of impending panic as well. There's just so much work to get done before I fly out on Tuesday, and I just MUST not think I can drive to Chch in one day in time for the flight. Not only do I prefer to fly calmly, travel with Zen, as it were, but I've been lately notorious for being late. I am recovering from being very ill a little while ago, and I'm afraid I'm in the habit of an in-patient shuffle and an encyclopaedic knowledge of late modern tv - mostly comedy, crime and thriller. I used to be super active. I'm just not sure I remember how.

Of course, my printer had to go out - but only just after it had printed all the essentials, apart from the first of two assignments I have to hand in before I go - the 12 pages of exact insurance coverage could probably exist quite safely as a digital file. Nevertheless, you sit there miserably contemplating what could possibly go wrong with that. I registered on SafeTravel. I have my shots. Apart from an irritating, roughly every two-hour reminder from some grey and brown pain-in-the-ass mental accountant in the back of my mind who keeps telling me I need to bring insect repellant, non-aerosol repellant, because I'll need to put it on in the plane or I'll catch Dengue from a day-biting mosquito. My panic has many facets.

I have just radically upgraded my accommodation after reading about a food-stealing weirdo who appears to be living at my first choice, apparently with the consent of the owners; I've stayed there before, and while close to the beach and definitely kooky, they have on occasion shown a genuine lapse.

So the new place is way more expensive, but I've got privacy, full cooking facilities which will help keep the cost down, water that is safe to drink and won't give me a full fortnight's worth of dysentery and related, I won't have to buy bottles of drink at vast expense and ecological impact, I can just bring drink bottles and fill them; they have laundry facilities that are likely functional and clean. According to another review, there's been other thefts there too - this is a lockable unit.

Plus having a bathroom to myself is almost single-handedly a reason to upgrade. I will also have the freedom to get going early in the day, instead of having to rely on a silent alarm I'm not sure will work in the heat - it's old, and heavy to pack. I can also work on my laptop undisturbed by noise and people socialising. Thinking back to it, I went there because it is cheap and I was staying for nearly a month. It's fine like that, but I only have six days this time, and it's a business trip, so I can claim the GST back. Honestly can't think why I didn't book a place like this in the first place! There's every reason to upgrade.
